A special service was held recently at the Nelson Hospital Chapel to commission several new Volunteer Chaplaincy Assistants (VCAs). These individuals began their training in August last year and are now working solo on the wards, gaining valuable hands-on experience. We are thrilled to officially recognise their dedication and hard work.
The service was well-attended, with around 30 people present. It began with a karakia and waiata led by Nelson Hospital’s Director of Māori Health, setting a meaningful tone for the occasion. Our Local Chaplaincy Committee chair, a former hospital chaplain, gave the call to worship.
The service was made even more personal by the volunteers, who selected hymns and scripture readings that held special meaning for them. Rev. Stephen Gully, the hospital’s lead chaplain, delivered a thoughtful reflection that tied together the scriptures beautifully.
Several ministers from the candidates' home churches were present to show their support, adding to the sense of community. One of the current VCAs remarked that the service felt like a reaffirmation of their own calling as well.
The hospital provided afternoon tea, which created a warm, celebratory atmosphere and allowed time for friends and family to connect and reconnect. The event was a fitting tribute to the commitment and calling of our new Volunteer Chaplaincy Assistants.
